  • Responsibilities

    CSS is seeking a part-time/as needed Environmental Scientist to assist with the collection of environmental data and samples in Salt River, St. Croix, US Virgin Islands. This project is in support of NOAA’s National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS), Center for Coastal Monitoring and Assessment (CCMA).

     

    Responsibilities will include:

    • Developing sampling protocols and standard operating procedures for the field work for review by NOAA PIs and local partners
    • Monthly collection of water quality data, including temperature, conductivity/salinity, pH, turbidity, and dissolved oxygen
    • Monthly collection of water samples for nutrient analysis
    • Collection of water samples following selected storm events
    • Storage of samples in a freezer and refrigerator, and maintaining a log of water and sediment samples collected
    • Packing and shipping of water samples periodically (every 2 to 3 months) to the NOAA contract laboratory in Texas for analysis
    • Communicating results from the monthly monitoring to NOAA PIs electronically using Microsoft Excel spreadsheets and Microsoft Word documents
    • Reporting on progress and any problems associated with the monitoring through emails and conference calls

    Qualifications

    • Master’s degree in environmental science
    • Demonstrated experience in planning and carrying out environmental monitoring in rivers and estuaries, and making measurements of water column quality
    • Familiarity with St. Croix, USVI estuaries.
    • Must possess a valid driver’s license; driving to sampling sites will be required
    • Must be available for up to 20 hours/month; project duration is anticipated to be 13 months
    • Staff accessing any NOAA facilities or computer systems must complete a National Agency Check and fingerprinting
