Over all care of animals and enclosures and/or performing specialized activities such as administering oral medications, injections, specialized diets, etc. Completes animal care duties and responsibilities including cage wash duties as directed by the manager or their designee. May include training other Animal Care Technicians and /or investigative staff on facility specific procedures and requirements. All actions are completed by strictly and consistently following applicable SOPs including safety procedures and policies. Reports any suspected or actual deviations to SOPs or non-routine situations immediately to the Manager or their designee.
Animal Husbandry - Perform daily animal husbandry related tasks, including but not limited to: feeding/watering animals, cleaning of animal cages/pens/rooms/equipment, and maintaining animal housing/census records.
Animal Health - Perform daily animal health/veterinary care tasks as directed, including but not limited to: daily monitoring of animal health status and reporting, collecting diagnostic samples/specimens, administering prescribed medications/treatments and maintaining veterinary health records.
Research Support - Provide research support to investigators as required, including but not limited to: transporting animals, weighing animals, and collecting samples/specimens.
Facility Maintenance - Perform general animal facility custodial and maintenance tasks as directed, including but not limited to: general housekeeping of all animal facility support areas, and performing scheduled equipment preventive maintenance.
Maintain cleanliness of work area and quality and safety standards. Operate specialized equipment including ventilated rack system, cage washer, and autoclaves.
Assist in weekend and holiday operations and be on-call to advise and resolve issues.
On-call as Essential Personnel and available for work during emergency events, i.e. hurricanes.
Attend animal care training as required.

This position is heavy in manual labor and requires the physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and in excess of 50 pounds occasionally, repetitive motion, and working in an ABSL-2 facility.
High school diploma or equivalent and three years of relevant experience; or certification as a Laboratory Animal Technician or Technologist by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science. Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience. AALAS Laboratory Animal Technician certification at time of hire. Maintain a valid state driver’s license.
Prefer HS degree or higher with at least 5 years’ experience with research animal care at a research institution or other appropriate environment. Strongly prefer AALAS LATG certification at time of hire.
