  • Responsibilities

    CSS is seeking a lead facilities maintenance technician to provide support at NOAA’s Marine Laboratories (Hollings and CCEHBR) in Charleston, SC.  World-class marine science is conducted at these facilities, and this full-time position will provide hands-on support in maintaining the research infrastructure.  CSS is an employee-owned company committed to the long-term success of our employees.     Responsibilities:  The successful candidate will provide leadership to other CSS facility technicians and work with the NOAA lab manager in providing facility technical support.  Specific responsibilities include:

    1. Plan weekly and daily tasks of facility team based on status of ongoing projects, preventative maintenance schedules, job hazards, and repair requests received from research scientists and other onsite staff.
    2. Troubleshoot failed electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems and make recommendations as to whether repairs can be made in house or by an outside specialty contractor. Recommend replacement parts to repair broken systems.
    3. Repair lab facilities and equipment, including plumbing, HVAC, and electrical systems, following OSHA safety procedures.
    4. Ensure code compliance by inspecting and testing electrical systems, equipment and components to identify hazards or needed repairs.
    5. Oversee safety program with other CSS facility staff and provide safety guidance. Perform safety checks throughout the facility, including installed systems, to ensure a safe and clean environment for the patrons of the facility and eliminate any hazards.
    6. Perform routine, daily inspection and maintenance to laboratory building exterior/interior
    7. Perform installation, maintenance, repair, and construction in the building maintenance trades, such as carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing, locksmith, carpet, and mechanics.
    8. Maintain facility records, including preventative maintenance schedules, Safety Data Sheets and training records, and contribute to reports on activities and repairs completed each month.
    9. Maintain shelving, tool area, in clean and orderly condition.

    Qualifications

    Minimum requirements:

    1. A.S. degree plus 4 years of experience, or H.S. diploma/General Education Diploma and 6 years of experience. Experience should be as semi-skilled worker in one or more of the basic building maintenance trades.
    2. Significant experience using manual and electrical hand tools.
    3. Proficiency in electrical troubleshooting of high and low voltage and the use of diagnostic equipment, including volt/ohm meters.
    4. Ability to troubleshoot building systems (e.g. HVAC, electrical, plumbing, steam distribution).
    5. Demonstrated attention to detail and organizational skills.
    6. Ability to work a flexible schedule, which may include off-shift hours and weekend assignments.
    7. Ability to work productively in a team environment and individually.

    1. Must be able to operate a forklift, light truck, and other related motorized equipment.

    Preferred requirements

    1. Current electrical license (journeyman or master) to meet government regulations. Proficient knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC), local codes and construction safety requirements.
    2. HVAC certifications.
    3. OSHA 30-hr safety certification
    4. Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 products

     

    Physical requirements:

    1. Must be able to lift and stack objects up to 50 pounds occasionally and frequently exert 10 to 20 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects.
    2. Work involves frequent periods of standing and walking, which may include climbing ladders and staircases.
    3. Work involves standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, twisting/turning, reaching and walking in indoor and outdoor environments, with exposure to weather extremes.
    4. Must be able to perceive the nature of sound, utilize near and far vision, depth perception, provide oral information, and possess the manual dexterity to handle and work with various materials and objects which are essential aspects of this position.
