  • Responsibilities

    Essential Duties:   The successful applicant will conduct research in support of the Coastal Aquaculture Siting and Sustainability (CASS) Program headquartered at the NOAA National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS) laboratory in Beaufort, North Carolina.  The successful applicant will be responsible for supporting development of marine spatial planning research and products related to screening and siting of aquaculture in coastal waters of the U.S.  


    Key duties/responsibilities include:

    1. Development of custom geoprocessing tools and data models to support high-end spatial analysis, data analytics, and visualization applications to support decision making
    2. Perform geospatial and geostatistical analyses
    3. Organize and input data into databases, maintain accurate detailed records of observations, measurements and results
    4. Write reports and peer review journal articles
    5. Set and meet deadlines for completion of work in timely manner
    6. Work collaboratively in a team environment and contribute to other relevant projects as directed


    1. M.S. or Ph.D. degree in Geographic Information Systems, Computer Science, Information Technology or a related field with some experience in coastal and/or marine environments preferred.
    2. At least 2 years of relevant experience in advanced spatial data analyses required, including advanced spatial modeling. Applicants may substitute additional relevant education for required experience.
    3. Demonstrated proficiency in the automation of data preparation, workflows and spatial processing
    4. Proficient in the methods, practices and techniques of advanced spatial modeling, including raster and vector analysis and cartography
    5. Demonstrated knowledge of Python, including various packages and modules
    6. Demonstrated knowledge of geometric networks
    7. Demonstrated knowledge of project management principals and concepts
    8. Proficient with ArcMap 10.X, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online
    9. Demonstrated ability to work in the Windows operating system environment, and proficient in MS Word and Excel.
    10. Ability to maintain focus and quality on routine and repetitive tasks.
    11. Effective verbal and written communication skills
    12. Ability to be flexible in responding to changes in schedules and job priorities.
    13. Ability to work flexible hours, including some long days and infrequently on weekends.
    14. Able to work independently and in a team environment
    15. Ability to follow safety standards and conduct work in an environmentally conscientious manner
    16. A valid US driver’s license
    17. Able to work in the US without sponsorship
