  • Responsibilities

    CSS is recruiting for a part-time (20 hours/week) Safety Specialist to support onsite services at a Federal government laboratory in Charleston, SC.  The Specialist will be assisting the Safety, Health, and Environmental Specialist in managing the health, safety and environment activities. Specific roles and responsibilities include:

     

    • Assisting with the management of the hazardous and biohazardous waste program; responding to laboratory emergencies involving chemicals and biohazards.
    • Conducting monthly inspection of fire extinguishers and coordinating the annual inspection of fire extinguishers and fire alarm system with outside vendors; conducting regular inspections of eye washes and safety showers.
    • Coordinating certification of chemical fume hoods, biosafety cabinets, laminar flow clean benches and other ventilation devices.
    • Assisting the Safety, Health, and Environmental Specialist with laboratory inspections and inspection reports, corrective action implementations, incident investigations and associated reports, and follow-ups to prevent recurrence.
    • Assisting with maintaining all applicable facility operational permits.
    • Developing and conducting hazard assessments and safety trainings as needed on various aspects of health and safety.
    • Assisting with other tasks and projects as assigned.
    • Providing backup for the Safety, Health, and Environmental Specialist in the Lab Safety Committee.
    • Supporting coordination and continuity of research and laboratory operations.

     

    Qualifications

    Qualifications

    • BS in Chemistry, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Sciences, or related discipline
    • 3+ years’ experience as hazardous waste technician or laboratory safety specialist
    • Good understanding of chemical reactivity
    • Experience working in a research or academic setting preferred
    • Certified Hazardous Materials Manager preferred, but not required
    • Ability to pass a National Agency Check (NACI) and maintain it throughout the duration of employment

    • Strong work ethic
